Are You Talking About the “Right” Thing in Therapy?
It’s not uncommon for clients to wonder during therapy sessions, “Am I talking about the right thing? Should I be focusing on something else?” These questions are natural, but they might also reflect a misunderstanding of how therapy works at a deeper level.
Therapy is about so much more than the specific topics being discussed. Whatever you bring into the session, no matter how small or unrelated it may seem, can contribute to meaningful change and growth.
Life is Deeply Connected
Elements in our lives are intricately woven together in ways that are often surprising. A conversation about a challenging day at work, a difficult family dynamic, or even something seemingly mundane can uncover themes, patterns, or emotions that extend into other parts of your life.
Example: A discussion about procrastination might lead to insights about perfectionism, fear of failure, or unexpressed emotions.
Surprising Outcomes: A session spent exploring stress about a small event might help unlock clarity or resolve tension in a much larger area of your life.
You don’t need to worry about finding the “perfect” topic. Therapy doesn’t require you to come with a polished agenda. Life doesn’t work that way, and neither does healing.
What the Psychologist is Really Listening For
While your psychologist will hear the details of what you share, their primary focus goes beyond the specifics of the content. They are paying attention to dynamics and patterns, unspoken themes, and the interpersonal dynamics that emerge in the session itself.
Therapy as a Microcosm of Life
The therapy session itself is a living representation of your broader life. The interpersonal and emotional dynamics that arise in therapy often mirror patterns that exist in other relationships and contexts.
If you find it hard to ask for help in life, you may notice the same struggle in therapy. If you feel self-critical, those feelings might surface in the way you interpret your own progress in therapy.
These deeper aspects, beyond the specific topic being discussed, are where much of the healing happens.
How Healing Happens Beyond Words
One of the fascinating aspects of therapy is that not all growth is conscious or verbal. While your psychologist tracks these deeper dynamics, so does your unconscious mind. This process can result in changes and improvements in ways you might not fully understand.
Issues can improve without direct focus. You might notice that a particular worry or challenge feels lighter or more manageable without ever having focused on it explicitly in therapy.
